Chewbacca is a Wookiee, a seven foot tall fur covered humanoid who speaks in a combination of grunts and roars. He is also an excellent engineer and the first mate of the Millennium Falcon, the spaceship owned by his friend and business partner Han Solo. Chewie was dragged, along with Solo, into the war between the Rebel Alliance and the Empire, an occupation only marginally more dangerous than their former career as smugglers, but slightly more rewarding.

Chewbacca is obviously an American created character, but he has appeared in Marvel UK originated Star Wars stories by writers such as Alan Moore.
