Cathbad is a character from the 2000 AD strip Sláine, and part of the Millsverse. He was the druid for the Sessair, the tribe of Sláine MacRoth, and was skilled in healing and prophecy. When Sláine was fifteen, Cathbad initiated him into the Red Branch, the greatest warriors of the Sessair. This was done by leaving the boy chained in a cairn (the burial place of fallen heroes) for three days and nights, then letting a single shaft of midwinter sun shine into the tomb and hit him. Despite Cathbad's unvoiced trepidation, Sláine survived the power of the earth and sun warping through him, and emerged from the tomb unscathed. Cathbad had visions of a great future for him.
