Stories in which at least one of the main characters or antagonists is a vampire, making vampirism an essential component of the plot. Vampires are scary, but (ever since Bram Stoker's Dracula) also kind of sexy. Although vampires traditionally belong in the fantasy genre, they can crop up in science fiction too as long as they're given a pseudo-scientific origin — Durham Red, for example, had her DNA mutated by an isotope of strontium. They aren't necessarily villains, but they probably won't be complete saints either. Vampire stories can feature themes such as sexual exploitation, drug addiction, contagion, moral dilemmas, conflicting desires and even the evils of prejudice ("These poor misunderstood vampires just want to be loved!").
