In 1973, three years before Marvel UK launched Captain Britain (Brian Braddock) in his own weekly comic, IPC almost published a character of the same name. This ultimately abortive title, proposed by editor Jack leGrand and designer Doug Church, never got beyond the creation of a dummy first issue drawn by Eric Bradbury (Tom Kerr, Antonio Garcia, Kevin O'Neill and Mike Western all tried out for the highly hush-hush project code-named 'JNP 55' but were not able to convincingly pull off a superhero strip) but it would have been a weekly title featuring the Captain himself in the lead strip, with various back-ups. Several back-up strips were proposed, one of which (Zarga, Man of Mystery) eventually appeared in the pages of Buster. Another, Double Dynamite, found a home in Action, and Ken Reid's Dare-a-Day Davy was also considered. Captain Britain himself was a mysterious character who had apparently been born in the distant past and empowered by beings from beneath the sea, though beyond this and the fact that he had a variety of powers including flight, super strength and telepathy, little is known about him.
