Bob Byrne's Twisted Tales

"Picture a grotesque imaginary land, somewhere in the outer reaches of reality — a dark landscape of strange figures and weird machinations, seemingly conjured from the very depths of a terrifying fever-dream. Here, what you never thought possible can come true, and the stuff of nightmares is part of the everyday. Welcome to the warped, wordless world of Bob Byrne..."

Bob Byrne's Twisted Tales are an occasional series of short stories in the tradition of Tharg's Future Shocks, told entirely without words (unless you count the odd sound effect). Written and drawn by Bob Byrne, they have appeared in 2000 AD progs 1536-1538, 1565-1566, 1599, 1615, 1639, 1643, 1647, 1729, 1730, 1755, 1802-1803, 1910 and 1923; and also the Judge Dredd Megazine #294, #335 and #338. In October 2020, a collected edition was given away free with Judge Dredd Megazine #425.

In the extended edition of Thrill-Power Overload, Byrne has this to say about his series: "I feel a lot of text is redundant in comics. Twisted Tales was certainly divisive, and I like that. Hey, I'm a 2000 AD fan. I've been that bothered reader when something unexpected or 'high concept' appears in your prog. You need to read my stories twice and some people equate seeing text with value for money. I get it, it's not for everybody."
