Orphan Bella Barlow was a young girl with a natural aptitude for gymnastics, but her aspirations to be a world champion were hindered by her bullying aunt and uncle, who were her legal guardians; they forced Bella to work without pay in their window cleaning and scrap dealing businesses. Bella was offered tuition in a private school, but her aunt and uncle opposed this until they began to see a way to cash in on her talents.
