History[]
The Autons, beings from the comic and televisual universe of Doctor Who are creatures of living plastic, animated and controlled by an alien intelligence known as the Nestene Consciousness. This means that they are a race of creatures with a single hive mind, which appears to have a natural affinity for plastic and the chemicals that make it.
The Nestenes have invaded Earth several times, because there is a lot of plastic there, but have been repeatedly challenged by the Time Lord known as The Doctor, the forces of U.N.I.T, and others such as industrial spy Max Fischer (see Business as Usual). Autons can be constructed to resemble anything from lifelike replicas of specific humans to animated shop window dummies. One of them once adopted the form of a wheelie bin in order to eat Rose Tyler's boyfriend. (He got better.)
On a later occasion, an exploding TARDIS precipitated a chain of events that led to Rory Williams, Amy Pond's fiancé, becoming an Auton and staying that way for 1,894 years. He got better too.
