Led Belly, Ro-Jaws and Hammerstein all escape from the police. Sir James Grey is furious and vents some of his frustration by having Howard Quartz tortured. The narrative returns to the 'present', on Mars, where Hammerstein tells the rest of the ABC Warriors that they need to find Ro-Jaws and retrieve the Defiance Code from him.
